Sandstorm season in the Gulf: the shamal, explained

The shamal is a northwesterly wind that blows down the length of the Gulf and is the main driver behind the region's largest dust and sandstorm events. Regional meteorology generally describes two shamal seasons: a more persistent summer pattern and a shorter, more irregular winter one — background worth knowing, even though a forecast doesn't require tracking it by hand.

Two seasons, one wind direction

The summer shamal is the more consistent of the two, tied to the seasonal pressure pattern that sets up over the Arabian Peninsula and Mesopotamia through the warmer months. It can blow for stretches of several days at a time, lifting dust from exposed desert surfaces and carrying it across the Gulf coastline, and it's the pattern most associated with the extended hazy, reduced-visibility stretches Gulf residents recognize as sandstorm season.

The winter shamal is different in character: shorter-lived, tied to the passage of cold fronts moving through the region rather than a settled seasonal pressure pattern, and generally less frequent. Both seasons share the same underlying physics — wind picking up loose surface dust across a vast, largely open desert interior and carrying it toward the coast — which is why "shamal" is used as something close to a general term for the wind driving Gulf dust events, in either season.

Why the Gulf specifically

The Gulf's shape is part of the story. It's a long, narrow, shallow basin running roughly northwest to southeast, bounded by the Arabian Peninsula on one side and the Zagros mountains of Iran on the other. That geography tends to channel northwesterly winds along the length of the basin rather than letting them disperse, which is a large part of why the shamal shows up as a defining, recurring feature of Gulf weather rather than an occasional local gust. The dust it carries is picked up from the broad desert interior of the Arabian Peninsula and neighboring Mesopotamia, then pushed down the Gulf toward the coast, which is why coastal cities on both sides of the water experience it, not just cities sitting directly in open desert.

Why this matters for planning, and why it isn't enough on its own

Knowing that dust season generally runs warmer months explains why outdoor event planners, schools, and facilities managers across the Gulf build some slack into summer schedules. But a seasonal pattern doesn't tell you whether Thursday is going to be a problem. Shamal events vary in strength and duration year to year and day to day; a general seasonal expectation is a poor substitute for an actual 48-hour forecast for a specific city.
